Description:

Remastered reissue of the score to Ishiro Honda's "Mysterious Star Gorath" (03/21/1962). Disc 1 features the complete score in mono (possibly the first time on CD [see Additional Notes]) and disc 2 features the score in stereo. Bonus material includes outtakes, film edits and trailer music on disc 1 and music from additional films scored by Kan Ishii on disc 2. Music by Kan Ishii. Trailer music on disc 1 (track 50) features material composed by Akira Ifukube and Ikuma Dan. Disc 1 is in mono except for track 50, which is partially in stereo. Disc two is in stereo except for tracks 37 - 42, which are in mono.

Additional Notes:

The film is also known simply as "Gorath".

Some of the mono score has been previously released on CD. The album in question was released by Victor in 1991, which paired Masaru Sato's "Japan Sinks" (1973) and Kan Ishii's "Gorath". While I was able to confirm that the "Gorath" tracks are in mono, it's currently unclear if it's the complete score or not.

Kan Ishii quoted the 13th century hymn "Dies irae" for cues M5 (M5T1 in the mono version and M5T2 in the stereo version) and M6. "Dies Irae" has been quoted in a number of concert works and film scores, probably most notable in the fifth movement of Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique" (1830) and in Wendy Carlos' and Rachel Elkind's "The Shining" (1980).

The score was simultaneously recorded in mono (6mm open reel) and 4 track stereo (35mm Cinetape), which had different mic setups resulting in differences in the mixes between the two versions. For this release, the 4 track material was mixed down into 2 channel stereo.

The score was recorded on March 5, 1962.

Trailer Music I (disc 1, track 50) consists of material from Ikuma Dan's "The Last War" (1961) and Akira Ifukube's "Battle in Outer Space" (1959). The material from "The Last War" is presented in stereo while the "Battle in Outer Space" material is in mono. Trailer Music II (disc 1, track 51) consists entirely of material from Kan Ishii's "Gorath" and is presented in stereo.

This release had the lengthiest restoration period in Cinema-kan's history.

The bonus tracks (tracks 37 - 42) found on disc 2 thankfully have cue numbers (found in the booklet's track-by-track commentary) to help identify the cues found in each track. For those who would like to know, here are the cue details for those tracks in Japanese followed by an English translation:
